Environmental Education

Our field partners Our trainings and consulting Our documents and publications

When one examines the school situation in our African countries, one is struck by the emphasis which is laid on book knowledge. The subjects taught are many, but subdivided enough, and in general, without any relationship with the social and geophysical environment of the pupils. What is taught has a very limited influence of the behaviour of pupils: they know for example that it is necessary to sprinkle before sweeping, but almost never do it, they recite rules of hygiene, but do not respect any of it. They learn many things, obtained diploma, but remain insensitive vis-à-vis the dirt and bushes that surround them.

Faced with this situation, CIPCRE wants to contribute through environmental education, in breaking the wall around the school, by raising awareness of evident ecological problems in the teachers’ and pupils’ minds.

Training and study trips

Through seminars, camps and workshops, CIPCRE attempts to offer training and animation to schools, environmental cells, teachers and pupils in order to increase sensitivity and know-how in connection with ecological problems. An important emphasis is particularly laid on the capacities of the various actors to undertake precise analyses for environmental diagnosis. Other topics concern: the management of ecosystems, biodiversity and protection measures; the management of water and pollution.

In order to encourage the discovery of the realities of the milieu, CIPCRE also supports and accompanies the organizations of study trips in Cameroon as well as in Benin.

The global transformation of the school

Practical work turns out to be more teaching than training-seminars or study trips. Thus CIPCRE sponsors and accompanies various schools to enable them to improve the quality of the school environment: through the installation of refuse vats, lawns and green parks, school gardens, wells, etc. The pedagogic impact is important: teachers and their pupils use the school garden more and more as back-up for classical lessons; reflexes of organic restoration of the garden are deeply anchored in the spirits; teachers spontaneously and regularly organize the animation of pedagogical sessions; the cleanliness of classrooms and surroundings have become a daily concern.

The green contract pilot operation

The green contract pilot operation was conceived with the aim of implicating the teacher as well as the student in the environmental management of school, while gradually integrating the pedagogical aspects (new educational process, which teachers and at the same time frees the teacher and the student from any dominating-dominated relationship) in class practice.

The institution of this new approach has already made it possible for 14 educational communities to carry out diagnoses and environmental audits in their respective high schools and colleges.
At the end of experimental phase, the operation will lead to the attribution of an ecological label « GREEN SCHOOL» and to the reward, through prizes, of schools which would have particularly distinguished themselves.

ECO-Youth

In the school milieu, written text holds an important place, especially when it is written by pupils and for pupils and is presented in an attractive way. First established under the name «A l’affût – SU», the periodical ECO-Youth is produced twice a year with a print run of 2000. Essential topics such as water, tree or HIVAIDS, were developed with a lot of engagement and enthusiasm by young people themselves.
